The 19th Annual TAA Ixtapa Sailfish Tournament started off with a bang. The Dorado Pacifico Staff had the banquet room looking incredible. Co-Chairman Ed Lynch and his wife Shana had put together an awesome prize table featuring product from Shimano, G-Loomis, Coasta Del Mar, Island Lures and other various sponsors. Gray Taxidermy donated beautiful trophies. Not only did the Hotel have the room looking great but the food was amazing. Early in the evening anglers and guests were entertained by a dance squad from the hotel. A DVD provided by the World Championship was shown. Watching the incredible underwater footage of striped marlin taking baits was good motivation before wetting our lines. The evening was capped off with a solo by one of Dorado Pacifico’s own door men, Freddy. Freddy did a wonderful job singing traditional Mexican music. We even had the benefit of seeing Ed Lynch and Jerry Yahiro swing a young senorita on the dance floor.

Last year our anglers had the misfortune of experiencing a slow bite. Everyone was all hoping for good numbers this year.
Numerous anglers took to the water prior to the tournament with some catching as many as 4 sails in a day. Most anglers caught at least one or more and all reported some kind of action. Hopes were high for good numbers during the tournament.

DAY 1: While waiting for their boat on the opening morning day one fishing partners John Jackson and Smokey Molle heard a number of jests from the other anglers. “Looks like a lack of experience on this boat”, “This has to be a fix” and “Who paired these two?” John and Smokey did not disappoint. John landed 6 sails and Smokey landed two. After day 1 John led all anglers with 900 points earning top daily angler. Fish totals for day 1 were 34 sails. Daily first fish went to new angler Gary Fletcher. Last fish of the day went to Neal McNamara with just two minutes left in fishing time.

DAY 2: After a good day one we were excited about the prospects of another strong day on Tuesday. Turns out Monday night the area had experienced a number of earthquakes centered off the coast south west of Ixtapa. The earthquakes clearly impacted the fishing with only 9 Sails landed on day 2. Top Angler for the day was Dave Holland with 3 sails earning 450 points. Dave also caught the last fish of the day. First fish went to Smokey Molle.

Wednesday the Tournament hosted a Sunset Social in the Master Suite. A number of anglers were kind enough to donate their Dorado to the cause. Jerry Yahiro prepared his amazing Shashimi and Poki. The hotel’s chef, Daniel, prepared battered dorado. With hotel employees, Gregorio and Enrique, bartending and all the anglers and guests attending it was quite a party. Thanks to everyone who contributed and participated.

DAY 3: There was much discussion in the day off about how the earthquake impacted the bite. Apparently this had happened during this tournament before. Anglers were hopeful the bite would return to what it had been on day one. Smokey Molle landed 3 sails and a dorado for 460 points to lead all anglers. Smokey also landed the last fish of the day. First fish went to new angler Jack Richardson. 14 sails were landed on day 3. There were reportedly two marlin hooked this day with both resulting in broken line.

DAY 4: The final day of the tournament produced 15 sails. Dale Miles 300 points took the daily high point. 9 minutes into his day, Jim Gill, secured first fish of the day. With just 5 minutes left to fish Dick Wallace caught the last fish of the tournament.

The fish totals for 2009 were 72 sailfish released and 6 dorado and 2 tuna landed as well.

At the end of the final fishing day the Anglers and guests gathered at the El Mirador Restaurant to honor our Captains and award the Captain prizes.
The overall Champion for the Captains was Jose on the Angeles. Jose also received a Lamiglas rod for being the top captain on day 1. Other daily top captains were Miguel Jr. on Rebelde, Jaime on the Albatros, and Jose on the Reigna Del Mar.

This year there was a special prize category for anglers fishing with Shimano Reels. Shimano, our main sponsor, donated two Tyrnos Reels to be given away in a Shimano specific prize category. The first reel went to new angler Gary Fletcher who caught the first billfish in the tournament on a Shimano Reel. The second went to Danny Brooks who caught the last billfish of the tournament on a Shimano Reel. Congratulations to these anglers and huge thanks to Shimano.

Congratulations to the John Jackson the 2009 Champion of the TAA Ixtapa Sailfish Tournament. John is a founding father of TAA. Previously he has won the East Cape Billfish Tournament 3 times in 95, 96, and 98. John also won the Tournament of Champions in 1983 and the International Roosterfish Tournament in 1986. Joining John in the winners circle are 2nd place Smokey Molle, 3rd place Neal McNamara, and 4th place Dave Holland. This is a team of fine representatives of TAA for the 2010 World Championship.

I would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who helped out this year. The success of the tournament is in huge part due to the contributions of the participants and guests. The Dorado Pacifico Staff does an amazing job every year taking our tournament to a new level. Their commitment to constant improvement and first class hospitality is very much appreciated.

Ed Lynch will be Chairman of the 20th Annual Ixtapa Sailfish Tournament to be held January 9th to16th, 2010. As this is the 20th anniversary of this prestigious event both Ed and the Staff at the Dorado Pacifico have some real excitement in the works. Please mark your calendar as it is going to be one to remember.

2008 TAA Ixtapa Sailfish Tournament

The 18th annual TAA Ixtapa Sailfish Tournament was again hosted at the beautiful Hotel Dorado Pacifico in Ixtapa, Mexico, February 2-9, 2008.

The excitement was building as 34 anglers and 26 guests from the United States and Costa Rica gathered at the Dorado Pacifico to begin our week long event that included four days of angling competition.

The opening night banquet showed off the wonderful prize table assembled by Co-Chairman, Captain Rod Van Saun of Ninilchik, Alaska. With the help of our many fine sponsors the prize table included product from Costa Del Mar, Shimano, G.Loomis, Iland Lures, Ande Line Company and Hook & Tackle. Our top four anglers this year received trophy’s generously provided by Gray Taxidermy of Miami.

Recent fishing reports showed very good action for sailfish and marlin in the weeks leading up to our event. Favorable sea conditions greeted our anglers as they headed out of Zihuatanejo Bay early Monday morning.

The fishing started slowly on the first day with 1 Marlin, 5 Sailfish and 3 Dorado tipped by our anglers. Our Day 1 leader was Brian Hill with 250 points. The first fish of the tournament was tipped by Steve Davis.

Day 2 was a slight improvement with 8 Sailfish and 1 Dorado.

Each day anglers reported seeing lots of sailfish, a tremendous number of porpoise and lots of bait, but for whatever reason the fish were not on the bite.

Day 3 continued our improving trend with 13 Sailfish and 8 Dorado.

The positive thing about the low fish count was that the tournament was anyone’s to win going into the fourth day. A few fish could put an angler and their team into the running, and a big day could put you right on top.

Day 4…that elusive “Hot Bite” did not materialize and our final day ended with our lowest fish count of the week with 3 Sailfish and 4 Dorado. The last fish of the event was tipped by Mike Leech.

The Captain’s award party was held at the El Mirador restaurant at the pier in Zihuatanejo. Lamiglas rods were awarded to each daily high point Captain. The rods went to Leonardo on Fish On, Jaime on the Albatros received two, and Alex on Esturion. Jaime was also awarded a pair of Costa Del Mar sunglasses for being the top Captain of the tournament.

Judy Franich was recognized at the angler’s award banquet by Steve Davis for her 100th tournament billfish release.

The 2008 TAA Ixtapa Sailfish Tournament team for the IGFA Offshore World Championship held in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico will be Brian Hill, Mike Leech, Dale Miles and Judy Franich.
2007 Tournament
January 13-20

Take a guy that fishes for a living and let him run a tournament, your results will be nothing less than spectacular. Rumor has it that Mike was the idea guy and Jerilue was the deal closer. With the combined touch of these two, everyone who ever heard of the Ixtapa Sailfish Tournamnent had a great time.

There is a tremendous amount of work that starts months prior to the tournament, in a foreign country that has to all come together. Mike and Jerilue did a first class job at running this premier tournament.

The TAA extends it's gratitude for taking on such an enormous responsibility and delivering wonderful results.

Thank you

Zihuatanejo, Mexico

January 13-20, 2007

The 16th annual TAA Ixtapa Sailfish Tournament started out with 50 anglers boarding their boats at the starting pier in Zihuatanejo the morning of January 15th. The anglers were excited with anticipation of hooking up with a dancing sailfish.

Judy Franich started things off with landing our first sailfish of the tournament, with Suzzette Cohen landing the last one 5 days later.

Fishing started off slow after the first day with a total of 8 sails landed, 42 anglers coming back with no fish landed.

John Jackson topped the leader board after day 1 with 2 sails landed worth 300 points. An additional 6 anglers followed John’s effort with points on the board. The next day saw 2 additional anglers, Judy Franich and Alan Molle catching John Jackson for a 3 way tie for 1st place at the end of Day 2. Day 3 saw 2 of the previous days leaders dropping out of the running with Alan Molle holding onto a slim lead. Day 4, the last day saw Trisha Bothmer landing the only marlin of our tournament; weighing approximately 200 lbs., caught on 20# Ande tournament grade line.

Fishing improved each day of the tournament, although generally slow when compared to past tournaments. We landed 76 sails, 1 Marlin and 12 Dorado. This number represents a reduction of 33% in sails landed from the previous year. Many opportunities were missed when several fish hit like a freight train leaving anglers staring at circle hooks with a head.

At the end of day 4, Alan Molle’s name kept coming up as the likely winner as angler’s found their way to the captain’s awards party at the pier after a tough day of fishing. As Alan Molle returned with his score sheet verifying his 3 fish catch and high point daily score the mystery of the winner of the 2007 Ixtapa Sailfish Tournament was over. Alan Molle had just confirmed his place in the Ixtapa Sailfish Tournament history for 2007.

The only question left was who would be the 3 anglers joining Alan Molle on the 2008 Offshore World Championship Team. As the last anglers trickled in from a long day of fishing the scorekeeping team, headed up by Linda Veninga kept the results under wraps. Everyone would have to wait for the results to be announced at the Awards Banquet, later that evening.

With rods being given out by GLoomis and reels by Shimano, there was a lot of interest in placing well in this tournament.

The awards banquet served up our 4th place team of Trisha Bothmer and Craig Cohen, Richard Zeigler and Bill Crozier in 3rd, Kelly Schulzke and Richard Schwager in 2nd and Sam Nottage and Alan Molle in 1st.

Our IGFA Offshore World Championship qualifying team had a really tight race for the last 3 places with 10 points separating 2nd and 4th place. Both Smokey Molle and Kelly Schulzke had the same amount of points but Kelly won on time for a 3rd place finish. Smokey finished in 4th place. Richard Schwager slid into 2nd place, edging out Smokey and Kelly by 10 points. Alan Molle, Smokey’s son increased his lead after day 3 to take the championship.

As always, the Dorado Pacifico Hotel in Ixtapa handled our banquet and rooming needs with perfection. What a great place to stay in Ixtapa!

Next years tournament will be February 2 – 9, 2008.
